DRUMS BE EVIL!

There is a thread within fundamentalist Christianity that limits the instruments used in worship services, and claims to know for certain that God cannot bear to have drums used in worship music. Drums are part and parcel with pagan, shamanistic, voodoo, and/or satanic rituals and can never be part of Christian worship. OK. Deep breath.

From http://dictionary.reference.com...

psaltery = An ancient stringed instrument played by plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum.

cymbal = A percussion instrument consisting of a concave brass plate that makes a loud clashing tone when hit with a drumstick or when used in pairs.

trumpet = A soprano brass wind instrument consisting of a long metal tube looped once and ending in a flared bell, the modern type being equipped with three valves for producing variations in pitch.

timbrel = An ancient percussion instrument similar to a tambourine. (English word is Diminutive of Middle English timbre = drum)

dance = To move rhythmically usually to music, using prescribed or improvised steps and gestures.

noise = Sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired; or a sound of any kind; or a loud outcry or commotion (Middle English, from Old French, perhaps from Vulgar Latin nausea = discomfort, from Latin nausea = seasickness.)

praise = Expression of approval, commendation, or admiration; The extolling or exaltation of a deity, ruler, or hero.

Psalm 33:1-3

Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

Exodus 15:20-21

Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. And Miriam sang to them:

"Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea."

Psalm 149:2-4

Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!
Let them praise his name with dancing,
making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
For the LORD takes pleasure in his people;
he adorns the humble with salvation.

Psalm 150

Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!

Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD!

2 Samuel 6:2-5, 12-17

And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark.

And David and all the house of Israel were making merry before the LORD, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.

...

So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. And when those who bore the ark of the LORD had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the LORD and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

2 Chronicles 5:10-14

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses put there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of Egypt. And when the priests came out of the Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had consecrated themselves, without regard to their divisions, and all the Levitical singers, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, their sons and kinsmen, arrayed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar with 120 priests who were trumpeters; and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD), and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the LORD,

"For he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever,"

the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.

I don't understand the distinction between tambourines and cymbals being holy, temple-approved instruments, but drums are tools of the devil meant to seduce us away from God. I can use a butcher knife to cook a healthy meal for my family, or I can use it to k1ll my enemy. I can use fire to bake nutritious bread or I can commit arson. I can use my body to love my wife within marriage, or I can defraud and abuse my body with others. With gold I can support missionaries or cast a household idol. But drums, always and no matter what the intent, are evil.

All of the instruments used in the Bible for musical worship, and even written words all by themselves, can be used to draw people away from God and rebel against God.

I also do not understand the distinction between "Worship Time" and non-worship activities. During Worship Time I can only do things that are EXPLICITLY approved of and demonstrated in the Bible, but during other times I am free to use my God-given mental faculties and discernment? Does this mean I can use a projector to watch a movie, but I can't use it to display lyrics during Worship Time? I can play a drum as part of a military band playing Sousa marches, right, or the 1812 Overture, or for the score of a movie -- or maybe it is satan1c... but no drums in Worship Time? I can use a computer to do all kinds of stuff for learning or entertainment, but I can't use it during Worship Time? Can I use electricity during Worship Time? If your answer is yes, what scripture do you use to support your answer?

I have heard drums used as part of some sick and disgusting music, also used as part of s3nsuality, and I have heard them used to glorify God. I have also heard sick and disgusting things that were a capella. We have a full orchestra in our Baptist church including a (gulp!) full drum kit and a set of (please no!) timpani. When played in the hands of talented worshipers, they add quite a lot to the experience of worship. It has nothing at all to do with rock and roll or a driving sensual beat. But I guess I need to tell my minister of music and my pastor that they are deceived and need to repent of this evil.

I am thankful that the ultra-traditionalist modes of worship honors God and praises God the way He wants. If the rest of Christendom is deceived, and straying from God concerning worship, then may the scales fall off our eyes by God's grace.

And I'm willing to bet that nearly all of the churches all of us attend church do not feature shouting, loud noises, or cymbals, or dancing during Worship Time, right? Even though they are God-approved and scriptural? God may want us to dance before him with loud shouts, but we'd have to do it outside of Worship Time.

The one things that really saddens me about groups who outlaw drums in church, is that they relegate nearly the entire Black church, in America and in Africa, to a status lower than that of the white church that uses God-approved songs and instruments and styles. It takes the entire musical heritage of black folks, from gospel to blues to jazz, and says God h4tes it and cannot be worshipped with it. If that is the true judgment of the God of heaven and earth, I would find that incomprehensible.
